Coles Bay is a small village on Tasmania's east coast, wrapped around sheltered water and backed by the pink granite peaks of the Hazards. The settlement itself is quiet: a jetty, a few shops, holiday houses, and kayaks pulled up near the shore. Its importance is simple. This is the front door to Freycinet National Park.
For travellers, Coles Bay earns its place because the nearby anchors are exceptional. Wineglass Bay is one of Tasmania's classic walks and views. Cape Tourville gives an easier coastal circuit with cliffs and ocean lookouts. The sheltered side of the peninsula is made for sea kayaking, especially when the light is low on the granite.
This is not a place to come for urban texture. Come for water, rock, beaches, and walking tracks. With one spare day on the East Coast, Coles Bay is one of the clearest choices in Tasmania.
