Hobart's restaurant strip, a 10-minute walk north of the CBD along Elizabeth Street. The two-block run between Burnett and Lewis streets has the highest density of small restaurants in Tasmania — Indian, Lebanese, Vietnamese, Italian, Ethiopian, Thai, modern Australian — most of them family-run, mostly very good, and most of them unpretentious. The vibe is more student than corporate; you can dine well for AU$40.
The anchor is the State Cinema, a 1913 picture house that screens art-house and independent cinema seven days a week, with a rooftop bar serving terrace wines and a small bookshop downstairs. The annual Hobart Comedy Festival and a steady stream of live music keep the strip busy in the evenings. Around the cinema, St Peter's Lutheran Church (1880, picturesque sandstone) is worth a look.
