Salamanca

The waterfront warehouse precinct — the row of 1830s sandstone storehouses at the foot of Battery Point

A narrow strip of waterfront between Parliament Square and Castray Esplanade, anchored by the row of 1830s sandstone warehouses that gives the precinct its character. Salamanca is technically not a separate suburb — administratively it is part of Battery Point — but it functions as a neighbourhood in its own right. The Saturday market dominates the precinct's public image, but the rest of the week Salamanca Place is a row of cellar-level restaurants, art galleries, design shops, and bars.

Behind the main warehouses, the Salamanca Arts Centre complex of converted yards holds artist studios open to the public, a small theatre (the Peacock), and the Long Gallery for visiting exhibitions. Walk up Kelly's Steps at the western end into Battery Point or along Castray Esplanade to the Princes Park lookout for the best view back over Salamanca and the harbour.
