Held every Saturday morning along Salamanca Place, this is the social fixture of Hobart and the single thing visitors are most likely to remember. Around 300 stalls run the length of the sandstone warehouses — Tasmanian produce (apples, berries, leatherwood honey, smoked salmon, oysters), local cheese, woodwork from rainforest timbers (Huon pine, sassafras, myrtle), woollens, jewellery, handmade ceramics, and street food cooked on the spot. There's a band playing on the grass behind Salamanca, kids running around, and the conversation tends to spill into the surrounding pubs by mid-morning.
Come early if you want to actually buy things — the best stalls sell out by 11:00. The market continues through summer and winter alike; in July it is genuinely cold and the crowd thins, which makes it a much better experience.
