Maydena is a tiny forestry village west of Hobart, close to the rainforest and karst country around Mount Field. It is not a polished resort town, and that is part of the point: a few streets, wet forest, mountain air, and enough oddball activity to justify the drive if you like the outdoors.
The strongest reason to come is riding. Maydena Bike Park has turned the surrounding slopes into one of Tasmania's serious downhill mountain-bike stops, with shuttle access and trails that run from mellow to very steep. If that sounds too intense, Railtrack Riders offers a gentler kind of rail nostalgia on pedal-powered carts.
The village also sits beside good cave and rainforest country. Junee Cave State Reserve is a short walk through wet forest to the mouth of a cave system tied to some of Australia's deepest underground passages. Maydena works best as a half-day or full-day side trip from Hobart, or as a low-key base if you have brought a bike.
