Cable Beach is a 22-kilometre stretch of white sand facing the Indian Ocean, consistently ranked among the best beaches in Australia. The sand is fine and pale, the water clear and very blue, and the sunsets — with the sun dropping into the ocean at the western end of the beach — are spectacular. It is Broome's defining attraction and the reason most visitors come.
The beach is broad enough that it never feels crowded despite its reputation. At low tide, the firm sand is passable by vehicle (in the dry season, camel rides at sunset are a fixture of the tourist calendar). Stingers are present in the wet season (November to April); swim in stinger nets or wear a stinger suit. The beach is about 5 km from the town centre.
