Gantheaume Point is a rocky headland 6 km south of Cable Beach where the red rock meets the Indian Ocean in a dramatic collision of colours. At low tide, rock platforms extend out from the cliff base and are exposed for exploration. The point is famous for 130-million-year-old dinosaur footprints preserved in the rock — visible in the original (at very low tides) and replicated in plaster casts set into the rock above tide level.
The light at Gantheaume Point is exceptional, particularly in the late afternoon when the red rock, blue water, and orange sky make for extraordinary photographs. The lighthouse at the top of the point was built in 1911. It is a standard stop on the sunset drive circuit and one of the most visually striking spots near Broome.
