Kūaotunu

Small Coromandel beach village with white sand, quiet coves, and dark-sky astronomy.

Kūaotunu is a small beach village on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, north of Whitianga. It is not a resort strip, and that is the point: a line of sand, a few houses, a campground, a good local food scene, and back roads leading over the hill to quieter coves.

The main beach is long, open, and easygoing, with enough space for swimming, walking, kayaking, and doing very little. Over Black Jack Road, Otama Beach feels wilder, with pale sand, dunes, and fewer buildings than you expect this close to Whitianga.

Kūaotunu also has one of the more unusual small-town attractions on the peninsula: Stargazers Astronomy Tours, where clear nights are given over to the southern sky through serious telescopes. Come for a beach day, stay for the stars, and you will understand why some Coromandel regulars keep this place to themselves.
