Hahei

Small Coromandel beach village at the walking and kayaking approach to Cathedral Cove.

Hahei is a small seaside settlement on Mercury Bay, on the eastern side of the Coromandel Peninsula. It is tiny most of the year, then swells in summer when Aucklanders and overseas travellers come for the beach, the marine reserve, and the walk or kayak route to Cathedral Cove.

The village has a simple rhythm: a long pale beach, a few cafes and tour desks, pohutukawa trees above the sand, and offshore islands that make the water feel sheltered. Hahei Beach is good enough for a lazy day by itself, especially outside the Christmas rush.

The real reason to stop is the coast north and south of town. To the north, Te Whanganui-o-Hei Marine Reserve protects reefs, clear water, and the famous cove with its natural rock arch. To the south, Te Pare Point gives you a short walk to old pa sites and wide views back along the bay.

Hahei is not a place for a long checklist. Come for one strong coastal day: swim, walk the headlands, and if the weather is calm, go by kayak or boat into the marine reserve.
