Haulashore Island sits just off Nelson's harbour entrance, a low island that helps shape the sheltered water between the Boulder Bank and the city. Its name points to the old practice of hauling vessels across the bank before the harbour entrance was cut.
Most visitors experience it from the water or from viewpoints rather than as a major landing destination. It is worth knowing because it makes Nelson's harbour geography more legible: city, bank, channel, island, and Tasman Bay all compressed into one view.
