Isel House is one of Nelson's better preserved historic homes, surrounded by mature trees and gardens in Stoke. It gives a domestic counterpoint to the city's waterfront and arts scene, showing the settler-era side of the region without turning it into a lecture.
The house has limited opening times, but the park is useful even when the interiors are closed. Go for a slow wander, especially if you are staying south of central Nelson or want a gentle stop before the airport or the beaches.
