Martinborough is New Zealand's most walkable wine village — a small town where a dozen cellar doors are clustered within easy walking distance of each other, making it possible to visit several in an afternoon without driving. The wines lean toward pinot noir, which the Wairarapa's cool-but-sunny climate suits particularly well: the best examples have the earthiness and depth that New Zealand's warmer regions can't quite achieve.
The main wineries are grouped around the village square and along the lanes just off it — Ata Rangi, Dry River, Craggy Range's Te Muna Road vineyards, and Palliser Estate among the most established. Most offer tastings without reservation outside the busiest summer weekends. The village has good cafes and a couple of restaurants that make the most of local produce alongside the wine. Martinborough is about 85 km east of Wellington; the drive over the Rimutaka Hill is part of the experience.
