Whangaroa is less a single town than a harbour district on the Far North coast, north of the Bay of Islands and south of Doubtless Bay. Its appeal is the shape of the place: a drowned river valley, steep volcanic outcrops, mangrove arms, small settlements, and beaches that still feel more local than resort-built.
The harbour is the anchor. Whangaroa Harbour has the enclosed, secretive look that makes Northland's east coast so good from the water, while the Wairakau Stream Track gives walkers a bush route to Lane Cove. East of the harbour, Matauri Bay is one of the coast's best beach stops.
Whangaroa is worth adding to a Northland trip if you want a quieter day between Kerikeri and the Far North. It is not a town for big-ticket museums or nightlife, but the harbour, beaches, and bush tracks are strong enough to beat an idle day indoors.
