Great Mosque of Durrës

The Great Mosque stands near the city centre and is the main Muslim place of worship in Durrës. The current building dates from the post-communist reconstruction period but occupies a site with a long Ottoman-era history. The mosque has a single minaret and a simple interior that reflects the Albanian Ottoman architectural tradition.

Durrës's Ottoman heritage is less visible than in some Albanian cities — the centuries of Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian occupation left more physical traces — but the mosque and the nearby Fatih Mosque together give a sense of the four centuries of Ottoman presence here.

A story
The Great Mosque of Durrës was largely destroyed during Albania's communist period, when the regime declared the country the world's first atheist state in 1967 and ordered the demolition or conversion of all religious buildings. The current mosque is a reconstruction, reopened in the 2000s, but the community that uses it has maintained continuity through decades of suppression in ways that are part of the wider Albanian experience of religion.
