Ashtaraki Dzor

Riverside restaurant complex popular with locals and Yerevan day-trippers

A well-established restaurant complex at the bottom of the Kasagh River gorge, a short drive from the town centre. Ashtaraki Dzor is popular with locals from across the region and with Yerevan families who come out for Sunday lunch or evening entertainment. The setting in the gorge, with the rocky cliff faces on both sides and the river nearby, is genuinely attractive.

The menu is traditional Armenian — khorovats (barbecue), dolma, lavash, fresh salads, local brandy and wine. The food is hearty and well-prepared rather than refined. At weekends there is often live music and dancing. Go in the evening for the full atmosphere. Booking ahead at weekends is sensible.

A story
Ashtaraki Dzor sits at the bottom of the Kasagh gorge, reached by a winding road that drops from the town above. The name just means "Ashtarak gorge." It has been feeding Armenians for decades, and on summer weekends it fills with extended families who come for the long lunches, the live music, and the feeling of being somewhere properly Armenian. No tourist performance, just the real thing.
