Ashtarak rewards a half-day to full-day visit from Yerevan. The cluster of medieval churches in the town centre is the main draw, and the Kasagh River gorge gives the whole place an unusually dramatic setting. The surrounding region has several more monasteries and the great massif of Mount Aragats within easy reach.
