Saint Gevork Monastery of Mughni

Well-preserved 17th-century monastery in the nearby village of Mughni

A well-preserved 17th-century monastery in the village of Mughni, about 3 kilometres north of Ashtarak. The monastery is built around an older church and features a distinctive gavit (narthex) with elaborate carved stone decoration. The setting, above the Kasagh gorge with Mount Aragats in the distance on a clear day, is outstanding.

Saint Gevork (St. George) is an important figure in Armenian Christianity, and this monastery is one of the principal places of his veneration in the country. The compound is active and well-maintained. It makes a natural extension to a visit to Ashtarak's town churches — easy to reach by car and often included on day trips from Yerevan.

A story
The monastery church at Mughni houses a miraculous icon of St. George (Gevork) that has been venerated by Armenian Christians for centuries. According to tradition, the icon was brought here from Bagrevand and has remained at the monastery ever since. It is one of the most revered icons in the Armenian Apostolic Church, and pilgrims still come specifically to venerate it.
