Sharambeyan Street (Old Quarter)

Dilijan's old quarter is centred on Sharambeyan Street, a restored stretch of 19th-century wooden houses that once formed the heart of the town's artisan class. The houses are built in a style specific to the Armenian provinces — wooden galleries projecting over the street, carved shutters, and ground floors given over to workshops. Several of the buildings have been restored and now house working craftspeople: a woodcarver, a ceramicist, a maker of traditional musical instruments (including the duduk, the Armenian woodwind instrument whose sound is immediately recognisable from countless film scores).

The restoration is tasteful and the workshops are genuine rather than tourist-facing. You can watch craftspeople work, buy pieces directly from makers, and — in some workshops — try making things yourself. The street is short enough to walk in ten minutes, but a proper visit with stops takes an hour.
