The Joanneum is Austria's oldest public museum, founded in 1811 by Archduke Johann — the same reforming Archduke whose statue stands in the Hauptplatz. Today it operates across multiple buildings in Graz, covering natural history, art history, and applied arts. The main natural history collection sits in the Raubergasse building; the Neue Galerie (new wing) at Joanneumsviertel handles art from the 19th century to the present.
The underground Joanneumsviertel complex, completed in 2011, connects several of the museum's collections via a broad subterranean plaza and is an architectural draw in itself. If you are interested in Styrian cultural history — folk costumes, local craft, regional geology — this is where to spend half a day. The combined day ticket covers all Joanneum venues.
Raubergasse 10. Open Tue–Sun 10am–5pm.
