Salzburg sits at the western edge of the Salzkammergut lake district and within easy reach of three of the great Alpine sights of Austria: the salt mines that gave the city its wealth, the Berchtesgaden alps over the German border, and the lake town of Hallstatt. All are doable in a day from the city centre.
