Almost everything worth seeing in Salzburg is on foot and in the UNESCO-listed old town on the left bank of the Salzach. A sensible day starts at Mozart's Birthplace on Getreidegasse, continues through Residenzplatz and the Residenz state rooms, into the Dom (cathedral) and across the square to St Peter's Abbey with its remarkable cemetery. From there, the funicular at the back of the abbey climbs to the Festung Hohensalzburg, the enormous hilltop fortress that has dominated the city for nearly a thousand years — take an hour for the interior and the view. Cross the river for the Mirabell Palace and Gardens and the Mozart Wohnhaus (the family home). If you have a second day, take a bus or a taxi out to Schloss Hellbrunn for the famous trick fountains. And if you are in town during the Salzburg Festival (July–August), even a single concert in the Festspielhaus is unforgettable.
