The daily produce market on Universitätsplatz, behind the Kollegienkirche, is the food hub of central Salzburg. From dawn to early afternoon, Monday to Saturday, vendors sell mountain cheese, Steirisches Kürbiskernöl, smoked trout, dark country breads, asparagus in spring and Tirolean apples in autumn.
The stand-up sandwich window at Salzwagen does the best lunch in the old town for under ten euros — bauernbrot piled with whatever is in season. Closed Sundays and public holidays.
