Lammer Gorge

Narrow limestone gorge south of Salzburg, with walkways above the rushing Lammer River.

Lammer Gorge is a compact but dramatic excursion into the limestone country south of Salzburg. Walkways and steps follow the Lammer River where it cuts through a narrow slot, with water churning below and wet rock walls close enough to make the scale feel immediate.

It is an easy add-on if you are driving toward the Tennengau or Salzkammergut, and it makes a good contrast to Salzburg's urban churches and palaces. Wear shoes that handle damp surfaces, and check opening times outside the main season; gorge walks in the Alps are often weather- and maintenance-dependent.
