Mozart's Birthplace

Salzburg's most visited museum, where Mozart was born in 1756

Address Getreidegasse 9, 5020 Salzburg

The narrow yellow townhouse at Getreidegasse 9 was rented by Leopold Mozart and his family from 1747 to 1773, and it was on the third floor of this building that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on 27 January 1756. It is now the most visited museum in Salzburg — the rooms hold Mozart's childhood violin, his concert violin, his clavichord, the pianoforte on which he composed The Magic Flute, and a fine collection of family portraits and letters. The approach through Getreidegasse — the narrow medieval shopping street with its wrought-iron guild signs — is one of the great sights of the city in its own right.
