Schloss Leopoldskron

The pale rococo palace on the southern edge of the city sits on its own lake, with the Festung Hohensalzburg as backdrop — one of the most photographed views in Austria. Built in 1736 for Prince-Archbishop Leopold Anton von Firmian, it was bought in 1918 by theatre director Max Reinhardt, who founded the Salzburg Festival.

The film makers of The Sound of Music used the lakeside terrace as the Von Trapp villa's exterior. The palace itself is now a hotel (Schloss Leopoldskron is part of Salzburg Global Seminar) but the lake and the surrounding park are public — a 30-minute walk south from the old town.
