St. Peter Stiftskulinarium

Attached to St Peter's Abbey, the restaurant is tucked inside the monastery's stone courtyard and has been serving travellers and pilgrims for at least 1,200 years. The cooking is unapologetically traditional Austrian — Tafelspitz, Schweinsbraten, Salzburger Nockerln — and unexpectedly good for a place so famous.

Reserve well ahead in season; the courtyard tables are limited. The "Mozart Dinner Concert" upstairs combines a multi-course meal with live performances of Mozart works in costume — fun but expensive.

A story
A document from 803 CE recording a meal served in this courtyard makes St Peter's Stiftskulinarium the oldest documented restaurant in central Europe — possibly in the world. Charlemagne and the scholar Alcuin are both said to have dined here. The current building is largely 17th-century, but you eat inside the cloister.
