Stadtpfarrkirche (Town Parish Church)

Steyr's late-Gothic parish church was begun in 1443 by the architects of the Vienna Stephansdom. The high choir, ribbed vaults, and tall stained-glass windows are characteristic of the Donau school. The interior preserves much of its original layout despite Baroque alterations.

The church is an active parish and free to enter; Sunday concerts are common. The neighbouring parish house, the Mesnerhaus, is where Schubert lodged. Together they make this corner of the upper town a small musical pilgrimage.

A story
Anton Bruckner played the church organ here repeatedly between 1886 and his death; Franz Schubert stayed nearby on his summer visits in 1819 and 1825 and composed the Trout Quintet in a house just down the street. The parish house's organ loft is essentially a Romantic-music pilgrimage site.
