The Leopold Museum, inside the MuseumsQuartier complex, holds the definitive collection of Egon Schiele — more than 220 works including paintings, drawings, and notebooks. The collection was assembled obsessively over five decades by Dr Rudolf Leopold, an ophthalmologist who bought Schiele cheaply when the painter was unfashionable and ended up with the world's biggest holding.
The museum also has important Klimt works ('Death and Life' is here), Vienna Secession decorative arts, and changing exhibitions of early-20th-century Austrian modernism. The white limestone building is striking in its own right. Closed Tuesdays.
