Zeiselmauer

Lower Austrian market town near the Danube, with Roman fort remains and vineyards northwest of Vienna.

Zeiselmauer is a small market town in Lower Austria, about 25 kilometres northwest of Vienna along the Danube. The settlement has Roman origins — excavations have found the remains of a Roman fort (Cannabiaca) and various artefacts from the occupation period, which ended in the 5th century. The town sits on a gentle ridge above the Danube plain with views toward the Wienerwald.

It is a quiet, rural place with a handful of vineyards and the slow pace of an Austrian Weinviertel village. Day visitors from Vienna occasionally make the short trip out for a meal; the town has a traditional Austrian Wirtshaus and the surrounding countryside is pleasant cycling territory. The proximity to Vienna makes it a possible base for those wanting a less urban base while exploring the capital and the Danube Valley.
