The remains of the sixteenth-century Ganca Fortress walls survive in the city park near the convention building, incorporated into the park landscape as a pleasant historical curiosity. The walls are fragmentary — the original fortress was never large, and centuries of earthquakes and reconstruction have left only sections standing — but they give a tangible sense of the fortified city that existed here before the Russian conquest.
The city park around the walls is one of the nicer green spaces in central Ganca, with a traditional teahouse (chaikhana) where older men play backgammon. It is a good place to stop, particularly in the evening when the park fills up with local families.
