Archaeological Museum of Velzeke

A regional archaeological museum at Velzeke-Ruddershove, on a Roman road just west of Zottegem, displaying finds from the surrounding fields and excavations. The Romans had a substantial settlement here, and the museum has good collections of pottery, glass, coins, and a reconstructed Gallo-Roman temple.

The museum sits directly on the Paddestraat — a cobbled stretch of original Roman road that the Tour of Flanders bike race still uses. A useful combination for cycling visitors. Open Tuesday to Sunday.

A story
Velzeke was a Roman vicus on the diverticulum road between Bavay and Aardenburg. The Paddestraat — the cobbled lane outside the museum — is a surviving stretch of that Roman road, still in use after almost 2,000 years, and a famous obstacle in the Tour of Flanders bike race.
