Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Hemelvaart Church and Egmont Crypt

The 16th-century parish church on the central square, plain on the outside but housing the Egmont crypt — the burial place of Lamoral van Egmont and several generations of his descendants. The crypt can be visited during church opening hours.

The interior of the church is a mix of late-Gothic and Baroque, with several memorial slabs to Egmont family members and a small treasury of religious silver. Free entry; modest dress requested during services.

A story
The Egmont crypt was sealed and forgotten for most of the 19th century. It was rediscovered during restoration work in 1860, and the lead coffin was opened to confirm — by the embalmed body — that the rebel count had indeed been returned to his home town in 1568.
