Statue of Egmont

The bronze statue of Lamoral, Count of Egmont, that gives the main square its focus. Unveiled in 1872 to mark the third centenary of his execution, it shows Egmont in full armour with his head defiantly raised — a Flemish patriotic gesture in the early years of an independent Belgium.

The square around the statue is the town's social centre, with cafe terraces, a weekly market on Friday mornings, and the town hall housing the Egmont Museum directly behind.
