Battenberg Square

Sofia's largest square, in front of the former Royal Palace. Once host to Communist parades and the Georgi Dimitrov Mausoleum, today it is a wide pedestrian space used for concerts, ice rinks in winter, and political rallies. The empty patch of grass where the mausoleum stood is preserved without a marker.

Walk from here south down Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard, the city's grand axis lined with embassies, the Russian Church, and the Military Club, all the way to Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. It is the easiest five-minute stroll in Sofia.

A story
The Georgi Dimitrov Mausoleum stood on this square from 1949, an Egyptian-marble pyramid holding the embalmed Communist leader. The body was removed in 1990 and the building demolished in 1999, but it took six attempts with dynamite to bring it down — the structure had been built to survive a nuclear strike.
