The Red Flat

A small interactive museum recreating a Bulgarian apartment from 1985 — every object in the flat is original, from the Pelikan-brand sewing machine to the Bakelite telephone to the wooden TV cabinet. Visitors are encouraged to open cupboards, leaf through magazines, and listen to records.

Set up by the Sofia History tour company, the flat occupies the second floor of a block in the city centre. It is far better than the kitsch suggests: the curated detail explains the texture of late-Communist life in a way no formal museum manages. Tickets include an audio guide; allow an hour.
