St. Sofia Basilica

Sixth-century basilica that gave the city its name

The 6th-century basilica that gave Sofia its name. Spare, brick-built, and much older than the gilded Nevsky next door — built during the reign of Justinian, with fragments of 1,600-year-old mosaic underfoot. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier sits against the outer wall; the grave of Bulgaria's national writer Ivan Vazov is a few metres away, marked by an engraved boulder.
