Snail House

Whimsical snail-shaped house in Sofia's Simeonovo district

The Snail House is exactly what the name promises: a private house in Simeonovo shaped and painted like a giant snail. It is not an essential Sofia monument, but it is one of the city's oddest pieces of domestic architecture and a useful reminder that the capital is not only churches, boulevards and socialist-era blocks.

Because it is outside the centre, it makes sense only if you are already heading toward the southern districts, Vitosha, or the National History Museum side of town. Do not expect an interior visit; the pleasure is the exterior, the absurdity, and the contrast with the otherwise ordinary residential streets around it.
