Franciscan Monastery

Medieval monastery with Europe's oldest pharmacy and a serene Romanesque cloister.

Near the Pile Gate at the western end of the Stradun, the Franciscan Monastery was built in 1317 beneath the city walls. It houses one of the oldest continuously operating pharmacies in Europe, in use since 1317. The monastery library holds a large collection of rare manuscripts. The Romanesque cloister, with its double columns and garden courtyard, is one of the most peaceful spots in the old town.
