The battlefield of Slavkov u Brna — known to most of Europe by its German name Austerlitz — is one of the most significant in European history. The landscape where Napoleon won his most celebrated victory in December 1805 is largely unchanged: rolling agricultural land punctuated by ponds and the Pratzen Heights, the low ridge that was the tactical key to the battle.
The Cairn of Peace (Mohyla míru) is the central memorial, a neo-Baroque column on the Pratzen Heights with a small museum in the crypt containing artefacts from the battle, including weapons, uniforms, and personal effects. The adjacent Slavkov Castle, which served as Napoleon's headquarters after the battle, has been restored and contains additional museum rooms and period furnishings. A signed battlefield trail links the main sites; an audio guide is available at the memorial. The town is easily reached by train or bus from Brno in about 30 minutes.
