Kamenice nad Lipou

Small Czech Highlands town with a chateau, old lime tree, ponds, and narrow-gauge railway.

Kamenice nad Lipou is a small town in the Czech Highlands, quiet enough to miss if you are rushing between Prague and the better-known South Bohemian towns. Its appeal is modest but real: a pink chateau, a handsome square, a very old lime tree, and a countryside of ponds and forest tracks.

The town takes its name from the lime tree in the chateau garden, said to be more than 700 years old. The centre is compact, so you can see the chateau, main square, and church in an easy wander, then walk out toward the old graveyard or the swimming quarry.

Kamenice is also on the narrow-gauge railway from Jindrichuv Hradec. In summer, the steam train gives the town its best day-trip excuse: slow travel through villages, woods, and ponds rather than another polished Czech showpiece.
