Landek Park Mining Museum

Landek Park is the country's biggest mining museum, built around a former coal mine on Landek Hill on the northern edge of Ostrava. The tour takes you 1,000 metres underground — not to a real working face, but to a perfectly reconstructed one, complete with the noise and dust and equipment of a mid-20th-century pit. It is one of the more visceral museum experiences in Central Europe.

Above ground there are halls full of historic mining equipment, a museum of mine rescue, and a section on the prehistoric Venus of Landek (a 23,000-year-old hematite figurine found here). Allow three hours, dress warm — the underground tour is genuinely cold and damp.
