Bangsbo Museum

Bangsbo Museum sits in a wooded estate south of Frederikshavn, organised around a 17th-century manor house. The collection is unexpectedly varied: rooms of domestic interiors from the Renaissance through the 19th century, a costume gallery, the famous hair-jewellery cabinets, a stable block of horse-drawn carriages, and — outside in a separate hangar — the Ellingåen ship, a clinker-built Viking-age boat from around 1163 dredged out of a local stream in 1968.

The grounds also include a restored German bunker complex from the 1940s, when the Wehrmacht occupied Denmark and built the Atlantic Wall along this coast. The bunkers are open in summer, with original equipment, gun emplacements, and propaganda posters in place. The whole site is large enough to fill half a day and is one of the strongest reasons to base yourself in Frederikshavn for a night.

A story
Bangsbo's most surprising holding is the largest hair-jewellery collection in Europe — Victorian rings, lockets, and brooches woven from the hair of loved ones, living and dead. The fashion peaked in the 19th century as a form of mourning and sentimental adornment; the Bangsbo collection grew from a single donation and now fills a long room of cases.
