Cloostårnet

Cloostårnet, on a wooded hilltop in Bangsbo Forest south of the centre, is a 15-metre red-brick observation tower with a curling staircase up to a small viewing platform. From the top on a clear day you see the whole town, the harbour with its ferries, the gentle hills of Vendsyssel inland, and as far north as the dunes of Skagen.

The walk up through the forest from Bangsbo Manor is the best approach — about 30 minutes through beech woods with marked trails. The tower itself takes ten minutes. There is no entry fee, but the bench at the foot of the tower is a fair spot for lunch.

A story
Cloostårnet was first proposed in 1923 as a memorial observation tower to the local landowner Hans Christian Cloos. Various designs were debated, money was raised, and the project then sat unbuilt while the funds gradually lost their value to inflation and depression. When the tower was finally constructed in 1962, the modest brick design that emerged bore little resemblance to the grand stone obelisk first imagined — a small case study in Danish municipal patience.
