Hirsholmene is a small archipelago of low islands about 7 km northeast of Frederikshavn in the Kattegat. The largest island, Hirsholm, has a lighthouse, a tiny year-round population, and a handful of fishermen's cottages; the surrounding islets are uninhabited and used as a breeding ground by thousands of seabirds.
A summer ferry runs from Frederikshavn harbour, taking about 40 minutes each way; check schedules at the tourist office. The islands are designated a Natura 2000 protected area and access to the bird colonies is restricted in nesting season, but the path around the main island makes for a good half-day walk with strong sea views, gulls and terns overhead, and a basic kiosk for lunch.
