Museum Jorn

Museum Jorn is an art museum on the bank of the Gudenå devoted primarily to Asger Jorn, the Danish-born painter who was one of the key figures in postwar European art. Jorn was born near Silkeborg and maintained a lifelong connection to the town, donating his collection here in 1953 as the seed of what became one of Denmark's significant regional art museums.

The collection includes several hundred of Jorn's own works, tracing his development from early figurative paintings through the expressive, mythologically-charged canvases of his mature period. The museum also holds works by other CoBrA artists — Karel Appel, Christian Dotremont, Pierre Alechinsky — and a broader collection of Scandinavian and European modern art.

The building itself, designed in several phases from the 1950s through the 1990s, sits pleasantly on the riverbank. The permanent collection is strong; temporary exhibitions are usually interesting. A worthwhile stop even for visitors who don't normally seek out modern art museums.

A story
Asger Jorn was a founding member of the CoBrA movement — an acronym for Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam, the cities where its members lived. CoBrA was one of the most significant postwar European art movements, rejecting the rationalism of modernism in favour of expressive, often childlike imagery drawn from Scandinavian folk art and mythology. Jorn donated his collection to Silkeborg in 1953, before the museum building existed, because he wanted to give his home region a significant cultural institution.
