The former home of Michael and Anna Ancher, two of the most important Skagen Painters, has been preserved as a museum. Anna Ancher in particular was unusual for her time — a professional painter who studied in Paris and Copenhagen, working from her own home rather than the male-dominated studios and plein-air camps. Her studio is still set up as she left it.
The house itself is modest yellow brick typical of old Skagen, with a garden overlooking the dunes. Visiting it alongside Skagens Museum gives a sense of the everyday life behind the famous paintings — the cramped rooms, the north light through small windows, the proximity to the sea that shaped everything the group made.
