Skagen's main lighthouse — the grey one, to distinguish it from the older white lighthouse in town — stands about 4 km northeast of Skagen on a narrow strip of land between the two seas. Built in 1858 and standing 46 metres tall, it is still operational. On clear days the views from the top take in the full sweep of the Skagen Odde peninsula and both the North Sea and the Kattegat.
The lighthouse is open to visitors in summer and the climb is manageable. The surrounding landscape is pure Skagen: low dunes, long beach, and an almost total absence of other structures.
