Tórshavn is small enough to walk almost anywhere in the centre. Distances from the harbour to the Nordic House or the National Museum are 20–30 minutes on foot.
The city bus network, Bussleiðin, runs free of charge — a rare and welcome civic policy. Routes 1, 2, 3, and 4 cover the main residential areas and the inland museum quarter. Schedules are posted at the stops and on the city's website.
For trips out of town, the national bus and ferry network Strandfaraskip Landsins (SSL) departs from the main bus terminal on Eystara Bryggja, just north of the harbour. Buy tickets at the kiosk or onboard. Renting a car is the easiest way to see the wider island chain at your own pace; rentals are available at the harbour and at Vágar airport.
