Tórshavn makes a natural base for exploring the rest of the Faroes. The other islands are surprisingly close — most are reachable in an hour or less by road, sub-sea tunnel, or short ferry. Even a short trip lets you see the dramatic landscapes that the capital itself doesn't quite deliver.
The medieval village of Kirkjubøur, just six kilometres south of Tórshavn, has the ruined St Magnus Cathedral and the oldest still-inhabited wooden house in the world (the Kirkjubøargarður farm). Buses run from the centre and the walk back along the coast is a fine half-day.
