Tankavaara

Tiny Lapland gold-prospecting village beside Urho Kekkonen National Park trails.

Tankavaara is a tiny roadside village in Finnish Lapland, but it has a clearer reason to exist for travellers than many larger towns. Gold was found in the area in the 1930s, and the village has turned that history into a compact gold-prospecting stop on the E75 between Sodankylä and Saariselkä.

The main anchor is the Gold Prospector Museum, which treats Lapland's gold rush as part of a wider world of prospectors, minerals, and rough northern ambition. Around it, the Gold Village keeps the theme alive with panning and a frontier-style restaurant atmosphere that could easily be silly but mostly works because the place is so small.

Tankavaara also sits against Urho Kekkonen National Park, with short nature trails and longer routes starting near the village. It is not the best base for deep wilderness trekking, but for a traveller already crossing Lapland with one spare day, the mix of gold history and easy fell-edge walking is strong enough to justify the stop.
